Glass Is Sustainable Which Is Hidden Gem For Carbon Neutrality

What is Glass?

Glass is made by heating limestone, sand and soda ash to 1,500 °C. This heat comes from natural gas, which accounts for 75 to 85 percent of carbon emissions from glass manufacturing. The remaining emissions are a by-product of chemical reactions between raw materials. But some of these materials can be replaced with broken glass, called broken glass. When broken glass melts, no carbon dioxide is released. Furnaces do not have to burn so intensely to melt the glass, thus melting the raw materials, thus further saving carbon.

Glass can be recycled infinitely without losing any of its properties.

The push to reduce the use of plastics is accelerating the search for new materials, especially for containers that can hold liquids. But glass is an existing material that could be the star of a net zero-carbon economy.

Globally, glass manufacturing produces at least 86 million tons of carbon dioxide per year. But when glass is recycled, much of it can be eliminated, and existing technology can turn glass manufacturing into a largely carbon-free process. What countries need to do is stop delivering glass to landfills and mandate glass recycling.

As with most forms of recycling, some considerations apply. The type of glass used to make windows — called flat glass — cannot contain impurities, unlike glass used in many other applications. Therefore, it is not possible to melt the jam jar to obtain the window glass. But flat glass broken glass can be used to make more flat glass.

Some issues require further study. For example, governments need to understand the monetary cost of upgrading glass collection and recycling systems so that they can allocate appropriate resources. In addition, glass is heavier than plastic, so using it as a substitute may increase transportation costs and emissions, which also needs to be understood.

Glass is sustainable which is hidden gem for carbon neutrality.

Glass is an essential material. And it's possible that its manufacturing will become almost carbon-free in a relatively short period of time. But legislation is needed to ensure it's properly collected and recycled, and that it doesn't end up in landfills. Communities and companies should be helped to build infrastructure to collect glass and recycle it. The answer is there, and it's relatively simple. They need to be put into practice – a move that we can all make a cup of.
