Sustainable Packaging For Cosmetics

We live in an era where most consumers are looking for natural, eco-friendly, zero-waste and sustainable products. This is partly in response to growing concerns about global warming and the harmful effects of many synthetic products on the planet. The rapidly growing cleansing and beauty movement is a clear indication of a shift in consumer interest. It's worth noting that many of these Eco-conscious consumers are also aware that for a product to truly be green, its packaging should also be as sustainable as possible.

With the rise of this trend, manufacturing brands have begun to take environmental responsibility by using packaging materials that pose the least risk to the environment. In fact, a 2017 survey showed that 24% of new beauty products are packaged in eco-friendly packaging. Other industries are adopting more sustainable packaging. Still, it's a safe bet that if a brand doesn't make an effort to reduce the waste and pollution caused by its packaging materials, the brand risks losing many environmentally conscious customers.

What is sustainable packaging?

In short, sustainable packaged products are those that are produced, supplied and used in a way that does not lead to environmental degradation. This means that the materials used to make the packaging are sustainably sourced, and the manufacturing processes used reduce carbon stamping. When these products reach the hands of consumers, they can be reused or recycled. Finally, if they end up in the environment, they can decompose without accumulating.

In general, sustainable packaging aims to combat the growing amount of plastic waste that poses a threat to life on Earth, especially the oceans. Research shows that there are more than 5 trillion pieces of plastic in the world's water bodies. That's because, for decades, plastic has been the packaging material of choice in the beauty industry and is still widely used in most consumer goods.

What types of packaging are considered sustainable?

Types of packaging materials considered sustainable include:
  • Bamboo
Packaging made from bamboo strikes a balance between sustainability, luxury and practicality.
Bamboo is an extremely renewable raw material that grows faster than most hardwoods.
The texture of the bamboo gives it a unique appearance that is loved by customers.
Using bamboo packaging can grow more of these fast-growing trees, which is good for the environment because bamboo absorbs five times more carbon dioxide from the air than other grass trees.

  • Glass and metal
Glass and metal packaging is reusable and recyclable.
In addition to being an excellent material choice as a plastic alternative, they are also safer for consumers because they do not release any toxins into the products they carry.

  • Cornstarch Packaging
For cosmetic companies seeking more organic materials in their packaging, cornstarch might just be the answer.
A viable plastic alternative, cornstarch offers a lot of possibilities when it comes to eco-friendly packaging options. It is both biodegradable and recyclable, making it a sustainable option for packaging. It is also non-toxic and does not produce large amounts of emissions, which is why so many companies are now looking into cornstarch packaging as a suitable alternative.

Cornstarch packaging is made from polylactic acid (PLA), derived from renewable sources such as corn starch or sugarcane. While there is concern about supply chains if it is used more widely, there are still options to incorporate this kind of packaging into overall operations.

  • Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR)
One of the most popular sustainable choices for packaging tends to be post-consumer recycled (PCR) packaging.
As you might guess, this is a form of packaging made from recycled items such as cardboard boxes, paper, plastic bottles, aluminum, and other everyday materials.
When the items arrive at a recycling facility, they are separated by material and sorted into bales.
The bales are then purchased and can be molded into new items.
As a result, capabilities range in terms of the shape and size of the packaging.

  • Silicone
Silicone is a material made of silica, which is derived from sand. It is used as a more heat-resistant, malleable and durable alternative than plastics.
Although it is not biodegradable, it also does not break down and release toxins into soil and water like plastic. However, it can be recycled to increase sustainability.
